JUDGING MODEL BEHAVIOR
By Joanne Richard

So you want to be a model but you aren't 5-foot-9? Well, don't despair. Anyone can get into the modelling industry, says Carolyn Nikkanen, model and talent agent. "There is a huge area of modelling that people don't talk about which is lifestyle, commercial print modelling. Anyone can do this -- all they need is a great personality and models can be pretty to character and unique," says Nikkanen, who owns Carolyn's Model and Talent Agency, Studio Talent Management and Carolyn's Kids in Mississauga and Toronto.
According to Nikkanen, there's a market for all ethnicities, all ages -- from babies to seniors -- and all sizes.
"It's a misconception that all models have to be a certain height -- that's for fashion and runway work only," she says. "Advertisers want to book models and actors that the general public can relate too so that they buy the product," says Nikkanen, adding that Toronto is an excellent market for models and actors.
'HUGE MARKET'
"Real People is a huge market in the modelling and acting industry. There is a lot of work out there, however, it is competitive."
She advises following three simple rules: "Train for your craft, have a great attitude, be self motivated. There is no room for laziness -- the days are gone, sitting back waiting for the agent to call. It is a 50/50 effort, just like any business.
"A model or actor must be trained; no client will want to pay a lot of money for someone that has no experience whatsoever," says Nikkanen, adding that the best models are those who have the time Monday to Friday to attend go sees, auditions and bookings.
POLITENESS
"There is not much notice for an audition or a job, usually one day, so they must be available," she stresses, adding that politeness, punctuality and professionalism are essential at all times.
"Have realistic expectations. Success does not come overnight! But dreams can become a reality and if you work hard enough you can achieve all your expectations," she says, adding that it's essential to have a good agent.
Meanwhile, kids are great. "We have lots of kids in TV series, commercials and catalogues. Kids cannot be shy and, remember, it is not always the cute child that gets the work."

AGENT MAKES STARS OUT OF CHILDREN
By David Shaw

For 7-year old actor Amari Myles, the best thing about acting is the food.
“That's why I like working in films, because the candy is terrific!” he explained.
Miles lives in Whitby with his mother, Heather.  He broke into show business two years ago as a client of Mississauga agent Carolyn Nikkanen of Carolyn's Model & Talent Agency, Ltd.
Nikkanen, a local resident for 30 years, was a former model who decided to start her own agency.  She also runs Carolyn's Kids as well as Studio Talent & Management.
“We book for catalogues and television.  We usually get referrals  from photographers , which is how I connected with Amari.”
Sears didn't want to use Amari at first, because of his little dreads, but they changed their minds once they met him.
“Amari has an amazing personality and isn't afraid of anything,” she added.  “In this business, the less inhibited a kid's personality, the better.  I look for an inner quality as well, since it's what's on the inside that matters
“Although one needs a certain charisma for the camera to get lots of work, anyone can do it.  But you need personality, determination, and no fear of rejection.  I recall when I thought another boy was too hyperactive to get work, but he made over $30,000 on one commercial.”
“Amari's success is terrific,” added Heather Myles, Amari's mother. “He's not shy, and the work helps his self-esteem.  I still can't believe it when he gets his picture in the paper.”
Amari soon landed modelling assignments in flyers for The Bay and Zellers.  “I feel excited when my friends recognize me,” he admits.
He also guested on such TV shows as Street Time for the U.S. Show-time network and The Associates for CTV.  Last year, Myles landed a role in his first movie, the science-fiction film, Absalom.
Myles currently plays Corey Forbes on Odyssey 5, a series that airs on the Space channel.
Myles just received full standing as an ACTRA member.  Nikkanen also manages Myles.  We tend to manage clients who also have TV series' since I'm an agent for 1,000 people in total, with an even split from infants to adults.”
A three-time breast cancer survivor, Nikkanen is a volunteer speaker for the Canadian Cancer Society.
On June 20, she will speak at the Relay For Life at John Fraser Secondary school, along with Global TV's Susan Hay and Mayor Hazel McCallion.
“I had chemotherapy and lost all my hair.  It was both a personal and business challenge, but it gave me a good outlook on life.”

Dear Carolyn's
I wanted to say thank you for all you have done for my son Victor's career. When he started with your agency he was just 6mth old and he is now 8, from his first photo shoot for Zeller when he was just 6mth old we knew he was made to be in front of the camera . Victor's first principle role for the May company which made him an ACTRA apprentice he has continually been working on commercial and film from Cincinnati bell to the latest Tim Horton's Commercial soon to be aired. The experience has been unforgettable .Victor was specially amazed when he met his idol Bobby Orr in the Chevrolet commercial he did. I also want to give a great big Thank you to Diane who handles Carolyn's kids ,she has been just amazing. Well Thank you Again for keeping my son working in this sometimes hard industry. Victor and I look forward to many more years At Carolyn's and continuing on auditions and hoping for Victors big break to be in a feature film .Victor looks forward to more opportunities with Carolyn's.
Sincerely,
Nadia Federico

Carolyn,
I just wanted to drop you a quick note and say thank you for a great weekend! My wife, Vicki and I very much enjoyed it. Courtney has always had such a strong passion to get into acting or modeling and after this weekend and the number of call backs she received, it really made her feel good. She surprises me sometimes how mature she is and how much she understands the business as well. She said on the way home, she totally understands that she probably won't get anything from the call backs she had but knowing that 7 agents called her back meant they saw something and that was enough for her, she knows her time will come to shine.
Thanks again,
Mike

Dear Mark,
Thank you kindly for your wealth of knowledge. You have taken the time out of your hectic day to thoroughly answer my questions without ever meeting me - and I am very appreciative for you efforts! If I ever move  to Toronto in the near future, maybe I'll come by and see you. You've  been a great guy. Now if only everyone else in the industry is just as  kind as you have been, the world would be wonderful!!!
 Sincerely,
Carmen Ng

Dear Carolyn's,

I would like to take this opportunity to give a sincere THANK YOU! Your staff members are excellent to deal with. They are so happy and outgoing, what a boost of enthusiasm and self-worth. My son loved the opportunity of meeting Ron Howard and Russell Crow in the movie Cinderella Man. He is quite excited about returning to the set to do more. He loved meeting a lot of new friends that we keep in contact with. I am thrilled about his modest behavior "It's nothing" and can see that he will do well in the future. Thank you Diane for taking care of Robbie and Thank you Lola for your outstanding work. Looking forward to more opportunities.

Sincerely,
Robbie Love and mom, Joanne

Dear Carolyn's Model & Talent,

Throughout the many years that I have been a member on your talent roster you have reliably called me for work on photo shoots, go-see's, auditions, background work, fashion shows, etc. I did not make all of them because I am only human but I made a conscious effort to make it to most of them once it was not in a serious conflict whit school. Now in the past few tears I have attended less and less of the bookings during school year so that I could focus on school work geared towards post secondary education, but somehow, every year, you wonderful people have managed to cast me right at the end of school year to keep me busy and out of trouble throughout the summer. Once again this summer you have not forgotten me and as a result I worked on  "Confessions" steadily before gaining a sense of continuity on "Degrassi". For you outstanding commitment to me throughout my time on your roster, I thank you.
As a result of your commitment to me I now live in Peterborough and I am currently enrolled at Trent university working towards my undergraduate degree. Once that is complete I will spend a year teaching English abroad before completing teachers college. From the money I have saved up over the years working for you, I was able to pay my tuition without the use of Ontario Student Assistance Program. I have a full term of work ahead of me so now I will have less time for sporadic jobs that can work around my class schedule until the end of April. I will keep you posted of my availability changes in the future.

Until the Summer,
Devon C. Codrington

Hello Nancy,

I  just wanted to thank you for everything with regard to my commercial for Bud Light. I am being spotted all around town from the print ad I did for The Food Network and I am getting phone calls and emails from people I haven't talked to in ages. I can hardly wait until the commercial hits the air.
I'm sure that Carolyn has told you that I have now become an ACTRA apprentice and I am very excited.
I look forward to working with you again in the near future.

Thanks again,
Teresa Wilson

Ava hasn't done much yet,I've just recently signed her and I now that it takes time...Adamo has been sent to a lot of jobs over the last four years that he has been with Carolyn's and for that we thank you!

Hi Carolyn,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and your staff for being so fun and friendly. It is always such a pleasure to deal with everyone. Over the past year I have had the wonderful experience of being a 'Carolyn's' model. I have met a lot of the other Carolyn's models at auditions and bookings and they too are all great people. I think you have a very organized Agency and strive for Excellence, as do I and I appreciate
that.
I was thrilled to see my picture up as Model of the Month back in July after only 6 months with the agency. Your Agency's constant encouragement and recognition makes me feel like I am truly appreciated for who I am, which is often rare in the modelling world. Thanks again!!
I look forward to more success, auditions and bookings as we approach 2004!
Keep Motivated! Keep Positive! Keep pursuing!

Sincerely,
Karla Ruzycki

I just wanted to say thanks to you and your staff for the hard work they do. Garrison and I really appreciate all your efforts. All of your staff is always so friendly and helpful. I know that you already know what a great team you have but I just wanted to let you know that we've really appreciated all their efforts.

Dear Carolyn's,

I wanted to Thank you for sending all your wonderful models to the show. Your models were so friendly and looked great. They really stole the show. I had so many compliments on how fabulous they conducted themselves. The haircuts were amazing and is really enhanced their looks. I want to thank you again. Without your help the show would not have been a success. I will certainly get in touch with you again for future shows. Hats off to your modeling agency-well run, well organized, professional and friendly.

Bethany Atkinson

Carolyn,

Three weeks ago I signed my 11-year-old daughter, on to your agency. She wanted to do modeling, so I did a search on the Internet and found your organization. I had to admit with all the stories about modeling agencies; I was a bit hesitant to sign her up. However, when I arrived at your office, read all the great commendations on your office wall and after I met Bob, I had a very good feeling about your organization.
Tonight I was at my first monthly meeting. I found all of your staff very helpful, supportive and energetic. I also had a good feeling when you spoke.
I’ve just read your article on the website that was published in the Sun and I now feel even stronger about the Agency I have chosen for my daughter to work for.
I too have been involved with Cancer in my family. I’ve not had it myself, however, various members of my family have suffered over the years, some successful recoveries, some not.
I was raised in an environment where volunteering for the Cancer Society was part of our yearly routine. My parents were 40-year volunteers until their health no longer allowed it. Growing up my Mom organized a bake sale on our lawn every April and my sister ran it. We take order’s weeks before and my Mom would be up most of the night making her famous lemon pies.
I’m proud to say that this year I’ve put a team together to do the “Weekend to End Breast Cancer” 60K walk. I’m also proud to say that my sister and I are starting the bake sale tradition with our girls this spring. We’re also going to attempt the lemon pie. My mom passed away last August.
I commend you for your strength through all that’s happened to you and I look forward to a long working relationship with your organization with my daughter.

Sincerely,
Gayle S.

Dear Holly,

I really enjoyed taking your course. I loved the way you made everything fun and enjoyable. I always looked forward to coming in every week. I have learned a lot in the past 10 weeks. I know feel more prepared and confident in myself. I liked the way you were fun but knew when to be serious. I will take the skills you taught me and go into the real world with more confidence.

Thank you,
Jenn
